Gums and Adhesives

The raw materials that comprise envelope adhesives or “gums” come from both natural and synthetic sources.

More than half (by weight) of all the envelope adhesives supplied in North America come from natural, renewable sources such as corn starch.

The effluent waste produced by adhesive manufacturing is minimal and is often re-used.

Over 95% of envelope gums used in North America are water-based, solvent-free, and non-hazardous.

EMA-member adhesive suppliers are members of Responsible Care® and practice environmental stewardship.

More than 50% by weight of all the envelope adhesives supplied in North America are delivered in bulk shipments. This method produces the lowest amount of waste.
