Sustainable Forestry

The envelope industry cares deeply about protecting the environment because it depends on a vital and renewable natural resource – trees.
Unlike oil, copper and other raw materials that exist in limited amounts and cannot be replaced, forests are a renewable resource.
To make sure that there will always be an abundant supply, the paper industry invests millions of dollars each year in reforestation and plants more than 1.7 million trees every day.
According to the American Forest & Paper Association, about one-third of the U.S., or about 747 million acres of land, is covered by trees, and that acreage has been steadily increasing over the past century. To continue this trend, forest product companies, on average, plant between three and four trees for every tree harvested.
These and other responsible forest management practices and aggressive reforestation programs, developed and adhered to by the paper and forest products industry, have led to our country having 30% more trees today than we had just 50 years ago - even as the U.S. population more than doubled.
Facts

On average, forest product companies plant between three and five trees for every one they harvest.

85% of paper used in mailings comes from forests that have been replanted.

According to the Society of American Foresters, for every ton of wood a forest grows, it removes 1.47 tons of carbon dioxide and replaces it with 1.07 tons of oxygen.

Most paper companies have signed up for independent “chain of custody” certification programs administered by organizations such as the Sustainable Forestry Initiative and the Forest Stewardship Council.
These groups monitor and assess the industry’s sustainable forestry practices.
